Ma. Rosario "Rio" A. Redulosa, a PJPS scholar, and two other students of Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) successfully defended their thesis last December 2011. The group's thesis, which is a project study of a barcode activated beverage dispenser, received a grade of 1.25 from TUP's Faculty of Electrical and Allied Department.
Rio is taking up a Bachelors Degree in Science specializing in Electronic Communications Engineering. She is also well accepted as a youth leader in her school. After defending her thesis with flying colors, she is all set to graduate by the end of School Year 2011 - 2012.
The following abstract explains the group's work:
"This project, entitled as “Barcode Activated Beverage Dispenser” springs an innovative approach to the typical Beverage Dispenser. It is employed with a Barcode Reader that identifies the availability of the cup used and supported by a Microcontroller Unit (MCU) that serves as the heart and brain of the system. The Microcontroller Unit (MCU) monitors the dispensing process of such machine. Moreover, the machine is an electronic and mechanical type that uses LCD and sensors for the detection of the liquid level while dispensing to ensure consistent amount of dispensed liquid.
To provide a steadfast groundwork, the study undergoes a series of evaluation to asses and tests the

accuracy, functionality and reliability. This was done through a repeated test points on consecutive days. In support with project testing, was the conducted evaluation from end users. It is then proven that the machine is 95.4245% accurate in dispensing 8ounce liquids and 94.1493% accurate when dispensing 12ounce liquids. Also thefunctionality and reliability of the machine were defined to be excellent and acceptable enough.
The machine is user friendly and is easy to install. The system design is beneficial not just for the concerned customers but most especially to those who really runs businesses like that of convenience stores."
