What is Restorative Justice?

  • Is a different way of thinking about crime and our response to crimes.

  • Focuses on the harm caused by crime: repairing the harm done to victims and reducing future harm by preventing crime.

  • Requires offenders to take responsibility for their actions and for the harm they have caused.

  • Seeks redress for victims, recompense by offenders, and reintegration of both within the community

  • Is achieved through a cooperative effort by communities and the government.

Principles of Restorative Justice

  • Justice requires that we work to restore those who have been injured.
  • Those most directly involved and affected by crime should have the opportunity to participate fully in the response if they wish.
  • Government's role is to preserve a just public order, and the community's is to build and maintain a just peace.

Practices and programs reflecting restorative purposes will respond to crime by:

  • identifying and taking steps to repair harm;
  • involving all stakeholders; and
  • transforming the traditional relationship between communities and their governments in responding to crime.

Restorative programs are characterized by four key values:

  • Encounter: creates opportunities for victims, offenders and community members wgo want to do so to meet to discuss the crime and its aftermath.
  • Amends: expects offenders to take steps to repair the harm they have caused
  • Reintegration: seeks to restore victims and offenders as productive members of society.
  • Inclusion: provides opportunities for parties with a stake in a specific crime to participate in its resolution.

PJPS Foundation, Inc.

  • The Philippine Jesuit Prison Service Foundation, Inc. (PJPS) is a non-stock, non-profit organization that advocates for a more humane approach to the rehabilitation of incarcerated individuals and their families.  It is one of the official socio-pastoral apostolate of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines.  Since its onset in 1994, PJPS has been responding to the needs of prisoners through its various programs and services.
  • Our flagship project is a scholarship program for children of inmates. Through the years, PJPS has helped these children cope with the harsh reality of having an incarcerated father through education. We are able to do this through the support of friends and benefactors who generously responded to the call of the Lord: "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."

Giving to PJPS...

Through the years, PJPS has developed a strong track record as a competent and effective agent in promoting a holistic prison ministry. We are able to do this only through the support of friends and benefactors who generously responded to the call of the Lord. In this regard, we would like to seek your support for us to be able to continue this good work. Your financial assistance will greatly help us in providing care for this marginalized portion of God’s people.
